Conservatives believe in law and order. We believe in strong borders. We believe in backing the men and women who put on a badge and stand between chaos and the rest of us. But we also believe in something older and deeper than any agency or administration. We believe in the God given rights of the citizen. We believe that government power must be restrained. And we believe that deadly force is not something the state should use lightly.
That is why the shooting in Minneapolis should trouble every conservative in this country.
The video is out there. Anyone can watch it. A woman sits in her car as ICE agents swarm around her. She reverses as one agent tries to open her door. Then she turns her wheels and moves forward. She is trying to get away. She is not trying to run anyone down. She is not using her car as a weapon. She is trying to flee a frightening situation.
An ICE agent steps near the front of her vehicle. He is not struck. He is not dragged. He is not pinned. He is not thrown. And then he fires three rounds into the car. One of those rounds hits her in the face. She dies on the spot.
This is not what restraint looks like. This is not what good judgment looks like. This is not what conservatives expect from armed federal agents operating in American neighborhoods.
Yet the official story from Washington was something else entirely.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem claimed the woman was using her vehicle to try to kill an officer and his colleagues. She said the agent was hit by the vehicle. She even called the incident an act of domestic terrorism.
President Trump echoed the same line. He said the woman violently willfully and viciously ran over the ICE officer. He said the agent seems to have shot her in self defense.
But the video does not show any of that. Not even close.
Local officials who reviewed the footage said the federal description was false. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said it was nonsense. Governor Tim Walz told the public not to believe the propaganda machine.
This is where conservatives need to take a breath and think clearly.
Supporting law enforcement does not mean accepting every use of force without question. Backing the blue does not mean giving federal agents a blank check to shoot first and justify it later. And being loyal to a President does not mean agreeing with every statement that comes out of Washington.
Conservatives have always believed that government power must be checked. That includes the power to kill. Especially the power to kill.
If a citizen is trying to flee, that is not an attack. If a citizen is scared, that is not terrorism. If a citizen is not trying to harm anyone, the government has no right to take their life.
We cannot allow the federal government to redefine panic as violence. We cannot allow the state to label a frightened driver as a domestic terrorist. And we cannot allow deadly force to become the first tool out of the holster.
A badge is not a shield from accountability. A gun is not a permission slip. And a conservative movement that forgets this will lose the moral authority that made it strong in the first place.
The woman in Minneapolis may have made mistakes. But mistakes are not a death sentence. Fear is not a crime. And fleeing is not a capital offense.
If we want a country where law enforcement is respected, then law enforcement must show restraint. If we want a government that protects its citizens, then it must protect all of them. Even the ones who protest. Even the ones who panic. Even the ones who do not comply fast enough.
Conservatives should demand better. Not because we are anti police. Not because we are anti ICE. But because we believe in the Constitution. Because we believe in limited government. And because we believe that the power to take a life is the most serious power the state holds.
When the government shoots first, the people lose trust. And when the people lose trust, the country loses something far more important than any political victory.
It loses its soul.
